Morocco - Marrakesh

Marrakesh is definitely the biggest Moroccan city we've been to. We really notice the simple things like traffic lights, and the extra tourists. There had been times we wondered whether there were any other tourists in Morroco but it turns out they're all in Marrakesh.
We teamed up with a Peruvian guy we met on the bus and eventually found a good cheap hotel in the depths on the Medina. We were nice and close to the main square (where all the fun is), but not too close to get all the noise.

The square (cant remember how to spell the name) is really cool. At night there are heaps of food stalls selling fresh orange juice, snails, sheep heads, and more common food like salads, kebabs, tajines, and couscous.

They also had stalls selling this fantastic hot cinnamon tea (they said it was Ginseng but we dont agree), served with a sweet crumbly biscuit thing that tasted spicy. We got the tea both nights we were there because it was so good, and so cheap.

Also there are heaps of freshly squeezed orange juice stalls where you can buy a glass for 50cents NZ. An amazing and delicious deal!

Also in the square are numerous story tellers come musicians, fun to watch but all in Arabic so we had little understanding. They draw a huge crowd. The square is so busy in the evenings. Fortune tellers and henna artists are also out in force and cigarette sellers (you can buy a single cigarette from young guys for a few cents anywhere in Morocco).

In the day time the food stalls are packed away and the snake charmers and monkey owners come out. We didn’t look at these as they are really cruel. The monkeys are on chains and the snakes have their mouths sewn shut.

We only stayed 2 nights because we are going back through on our way to Essourira. Its good actually because the weather was terrible when we were there. We did however still manage to have a good look around the souqs. And by look we mean glancing out of the corner of our eyes. You really cant get a good look without being hustled into a shop. Even walking by not looking in we got grabbed a couple of time as they tried to pull us in. It’s a pain because we really like window shopping but don’t want to buy anything yet as we will have to carry it around for too long. There was great stuff, like leather slippers, satchels, bags, belts, spices, glass lamps, ceramics, carpets, jewelry etc etc.
